What exactly is osteopathy?
Before we go, allow me to clarify one thing:
Here you won't find the classic story about how Dr. Still discovered something a hundred years ago and how everything is based on "holistic principles" from thick books - you know, the blah, blah, blah that you've heard a hundred times and which, frankly, doesn't interest me anymore.
And I have to admit something to you right away: If I weren't an osteopath, I would have concluded, after a little surfing on the internet, that osteopathy is some strange mix between a shaman, a chiropractor, and a wellness guru! Everywhere you look, you're met with platitudes about "balance," "sensitive hands," and "holistic energy." Honestly, after reading all that, I would be even more confused than before and would have no idea what an osteopath actually does.
That's exactly why I decided to write this text a little differently, with by desire to bring osteopathy closer to you so that it becomes clear, cute and – dare I say – quite a logical science, not an urban myth for wonder lovers. If you've ever thought “who knows what's really going on with those hands?” or, after the first sentence on a professional page, you gave up because you didn't understand anything – welcome, you are in the right place here!
Osteopathy is not just “adjusting bones” or “laying on of hands”, nor is it a method for quickly eliminating pain. It is a systematic, holistic approach to the person – based on a deep and precise knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology. A true osteopath uses his hands as a tool for listening carefully and recognizing changes in tissue; however, without serious medical knowledge, even the most sensitive touch cannot recognize what is important. Only by combining palpatory skill and scientific understanding is it possible to discern the causes of problems in the multitude of signals from the body, recognize complex relationships and act truly effectively.
True osteopathy requires years of serious education, constant dedication to professional development, and high responsibility - because only in this way can an Osteopath understand the complex relationships in the body and work lege artis, always for the benefit and protection of the patient.
That is why it should be made clear: osteopathy is not simply a “laying on of hands” or a “krc-krc” method. Unfortunately, there are those who offer “miracle treatments” without the necessary competence, which often harms the reputation of the profession and the safety of patients. A true osteopath acts professionally, with great respect for each person and their limits.
What makes osteopathy special is the ability to recognize deeper cause-and-effect relationships between symptoms and often long-standing injuries or life events that most people would not make the connection.
Below are two very illustrative examples from everyday osteopathic practice, confirmed in professional (and clinical) literature.
Example 1: The connection between the coccyx and headache – a real anatomical chain
Imagine a person with persistent headaches that develop years after falling on their tailbone. Most people wouldn't connect the two events, but an osteopath looks for a cause-and-effect relationship:

A fall on the tailbone can disrupt the tension and mobility of the sacrum (sacrum).

The sacrum is directly connected to the spine and skull by connective tissue (fascia) and the spinal cord coverings (meninges).

Long-term tension can spread upward, limit the elasticity of the meningeal system and, via the spine, cause a “bottleneck” at the junction of the skull and spine.

This can lead to disruption of blood flow and nerve function, which manifests itself years later as recurring headaches.
This is not a theory – but a medically and anatomically confirmed link between trauma to the coccyx, fascia, dura mater and the development of tension headaches.
Example 2: Liver and torticollis – when the neck suffers due to the reflex chain
Another, also real-life example: a person wakes up with a stiff neck (torticollis), perhaps after a night of heavy drinking. On the surface, the problem is the neck muscles, but the osteopath goes deeper:

The liver capsule receives part of its nerve supply from the same cervical segments (e.g., the phrenic nerve and the cervical plexus) as some important neck muscles.

When the liver is irritated (alcohol, digestive stress), a signal is transmitted to the neck muscles via viscerosomatic reflexes, which causes a protective spasm – torticollis.

Why is that important?
These are not "alternative" fictional chains, but anatomically and physiologically proven connections documented in serious medical and osteopathic literature. That is why osteopathy does not only look for the source of pain where it hurts, but in the whole person - in minor and major imbalances, old traumas and habits that affect health.
The osteopath looks at the causes, but also recognizes how lifestyle, emotions and everyday stress can contribute to the creation or maintenance of problems. The osteopath's task is not to "fix" a painful joint, but to respectfully discover where there is a blockage or over-tension that disrupts the entire functional network of a person.
Osteopathy is an invitation to dialogue with the body - with clarity, knowledge and empathy, based on what each person's body can and knows how to tell.
