Children with special needs and osteopathy

Children with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or epilepsy can benefit from the regulation of muscle tone, better coordination and relaxation of the nervous system. Children with Down syndrome, autism or chronic pain also often feel relief: tension, digestive problems or internal tension can be reduced, and general well-being is strengthened. Osteopathy is always carried out as a complement to other medical or therapeutic measures and is adapted to the individual needs of each child.

The treatment begins with a detailed conversation and observation of the child. Gentle, child-friendly techniques create trust and security — therapy is always tailored, without pressure and often through play. The goal is to encourage the body's self-regulation and provide the child with the best possible support in development.

While living in Germany, I worked as a therapist for follow-up therapy after my stay at the Filumi Children's Center.

The Filumi Children's Center in Bad Alexandersbad is an interdisciplinary center for children and young people with serious illnesses or disabilities, founded in 2021. Its goal is to permanently improve the quality of life of seriously ill and severely handicapped children, as well as their families, through comprehensive, holistic therapies. A team of experts – including experienced doctors, osteopaths, physiotherapists, educators, art therapists and psychologists – works closely together to provide families with optimal support. Therapies include osteopathy, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, music and art therapy, nutritional counseling, relaxation methods and many other approaches. An individual therapy plan is created for each child, and special attention is paid to the involvement of parents and siblings. The natural environment and relaxing atmosphere additionally help children find new strength and motivation for further development and recovery.

After the intensive phase of therapy at the Filumi Children's Osteopathic Center, continued osteopathic support at home is extremely important for the long-term preservation of the achieved results and the optimal progress of the child. During this phase, I accompanied numerous families on their further treatment and supported them individually in their everyday lives. Close cooperation with the clinic and exchange with the team at Filumi were an integral part of my work.

Especially in neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, after major surgeries or in intellectual disabilities, such symptoms can be very different and expressed to different degrees. Osteopathy always approaches the child holistically and individually, with the aim of providing the best possible support to each child.

The most common problems in children with special needs include:

  • movement disorders or muscle spasticity

  • muscle tension and limited mobility

  • developmental delays (motor or speech)

  • difficulties with coordination and balance

  • digestive disorders (e.g. constipation, bloating)

  • oral motor disorders (problems with chewing, swallowing or eating)

  • pain due to improper posture or increased muscle tone

  • sleep problems and rapid exhaustion
